Historic Newspapers & Obituaries
Newspapers and obituaries have been valued by family historians for more than a century. Long before the Internet, genealogists filled libraries and archives to access microfilm copies of newspapers - in many cases searching for the obituaries and funeral notices of their ancestors. The detailed information found in some obituaries can provide unique clues not available anywhere else.
In the coming months, we will be providing a detailed review of the major historical newspapers available for research online. While many require a subscription, we have found some that are available to researchers free of charge. Be forwarned, this can be even more addictive than other types of research. You may find yourself reading advertisements from 100 years ago just because the pricing and language of the ads are so entertaining.
